尼加拉瓜(Nicaragua)外交部9日下午发表声明,宣布与台湾断绝“外交关系”。声明说,世界上只有一个中国,中华人民共和国是代表中国的唯一合法政府,台湾是中国领土不可分割的一部分。尼加拉瓜自即日起断绝与台湾的“外交关系”并停止与台湾的一切接触和官方联系。

Nicaragua has become the latest country to cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favour of China.


Taiwan said it was "deeply saddened", adding that Nicaragua had "disregarded [their] many years of friendship".


It comes as the US State Department on Friday called for democracies to "expand engagement with Taiwan".


Taiwan's list of international allies has dwindled from 21 down to 14 since Tsai Ing-wen took office in May 2016.


"Nicaragua today breaks diplomatic relations with Taiwan and ceases to have any contact or official relationship," said Nicaragua's foreign ministry, adding that it "recognises that there is only one single China".


Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying praised Nicaragua's decision, calling it the "right choice ... in line with the global trend" adding that it "has people's support".


The Nicaraguan government signed an official communique to re-establish diplomatic ties with China in Tianjin on Friday, according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV. Under the agreement, Nicaragua promises not to have any official contact with Taiwan going forward.


“This is the right choice that is in line with the global trend and has people’s support. China highly appreciates this decision,” China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.


“We won yet another beautiful battle,” China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian wrote on his personal Weibo account, while sharing a video of Nicaragua’s Foreign Minister Denis Moncada Colindres reading the statement saying that Taiwan is an “inalienable” part of China.


Zhao called the change part of “an irresistible trend.”


Before Nicaragua, the Pacific Island nations of Kiribati and the Solomon Islands were the latest countries to cut ties with Taiwan in favour of China in 2019.


China also downgraded diplomatic relations with Lithuania in November, days after the Baltic state allowed Taiwan to open a de facto embassy there.
