The First World Science and Technology Development Forum opened on Wednesday in Beijing, focusing on innovation-driven sustainable development.

Wan Gang, president of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), said at the opening ceremony that it is an urgent need for countries to work together to deepen international exchanges and cooperation and to promote sustainable development with sci-tech innovation. It is in line with the expectations of people of all countries and the international sci-tech community, he noted.

中国科协主席万钢在开幕式上指出，携手深化国际交流合作，以科技创新推动可持续发展，是破解全球性问题的紧迫需要，也符合各国人民和全球科技界的新期待。

The two-day forum was sponsored by the CAST, CAS and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, aiming to build a platform for international sci-tech exchanges and cooperation.

为期两天的论坛由中国科协、中国科学院、中国工程院联合主办，旨在搭建国际科技合作交流平台。

Under the theme of "Science, Technology and Development," more than 400 academicians, Nobel laureates, university presidents and entrepreneurs from 18 countries and regions held in-depth discussions on topics such as the growth of young scientists and small- and medium-sized enterprises.

本次论坛以“科学•技术•发展”为主题，来自18个国家和地区的400多位专家院士、诺贝尔奖获得者、大学校长、企业家就青年科学家与中小企业成长等议题开展了深入交流。

The South Korean pop star and actress Sulli, who had spoken out against cyber-bullying, was found dead at her home south of Seoul on Monday, announced local police.

韩国警方10月14日宣布，曾公开反对网络暴力的韩国流行歌手、女演员雪莉在位于首尔南部的家中身亡。

According to her manager, the 25-year-old had long grappled with severe depression and constant online bullying directed against her.

The investigation into the cause of her death is ongoing. The preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play, and police did not find a suicide note.

The South Korean pop star was well liked in China. The news on her death soon topped the list of trending topics on Weibo, one of China's most influential social media platforms. Rescue workers in Japan continued to search for the missing on Wednesday as the death toll from one of the worst typhoons to hit the country in decades rose to 74, public broadcaster NHK said.

China plans to recruit about 24,000 civil servants to work for 86 central agencies and 23 institutions directly attached to them in the 2020 civil servant intake, the State Administration of Civil Service said Monday.

国家公务员局10月14日表示，2020年国考共计划招录2.4万人，涉及中央和国家机关86个单位、23个直属机构。

The recruitment, the first after the country's civil servant law was revised, offers more vacancies than about 14,500 last year.

这是新修订的公务员法实施后第一次中央机关及其直属机构公务员招考，招录规模较上年的1.45万余人大幅增加。

Applications will be open from Oct. 15 to 24, with positions to be posted on authorized websites, the administration said.
