the用在感叹句与呼语中
定冠词the常可用于不完整的感叹句中，表示各种较为强烈的感情。定冠词the的这种用法显然与它常用来表示为人所熟悉的事物有关。现举例如下：
① The fool! 傻瓜！
② The wretch! 混蛋！
③ The deuce! 见鬼！
④ The idea! 真是想入非非！
（= What an idea!)
下面是一些与其他词语连用的感叹句：
① The hell with the Depression!
让大萧条见鬼去吧！
② Pearce, the dog! has a wire-cutter in his pocket.
皮尔斯那家伙衣袋里揣了一把钢丝钳。
③ Now he pretends to loosen his collar at the throat, just for a change of attitude — the puppy!
这时他假装松一下衣领，只是为了变换一种姿态，这小子！
④ Have you read the story? The poor thing! He lost all his money.
你看到那个消息了鸣？可怜的人儿！他把钱全丟了。
⑤ She’s so cute. The darling!
她真逗人喜欢，可爱的人儿！
⑥ I have never heard of such a thing. He was trying to steal a car and he doesn’t even know how to drive. The fool!
我从未听说过这种事。他要偷车，但却不会开。多蠢！
⑦ Why, Willie, the way you look!
啊，威利，你气色可不好！
⑧ Oh, the bustle, oh, the clatter!

⑨ The power of it!

⑪ The insolence of his proposition!

that的语气更强，如：
Yes, Mary Batterton, that monster!

⑭ Oh, the difficulties of crossing that gulf!

偶尔亦可在表示感叹的同位语中用不定冠词，如：
You a miserable man!
你真是不幸！
呼语一般用零冠词，用the的现象多见于较古旧的英语中。但较强的表规劝等的呼语中，则仍常可使用the，如：
Stick it, the Welsh!
挺住，韦尔什！
