Beyond Anthropocene: Ecological Wisdom in Art

We believe that ecological concerns can serve as a unique prism with which to develop pedagogical tools that align environmentalism with creative practices like art. Art has long served as the imaginative conscience of a culture. It is also self-conscious, offering access to an awareness of how knowledge is made. Art not only induces contemplation, but also imparts information and makes meaning, provoking a different kind of awareness of how the world functions.

Human in Nature: A Practice of Humility and Defiance

Millie Chen

Professor at University at Buffalo, State University of New York.

Millie Chen’s visual, audio and performative works are intended to interrupt habits of viewing. Materials, tools and methodologies are contingent on the needs of the moment, but at the core of all her projects are social inquiry and the use of sensory modes of perception in the generation of knowledge. For over a decade, she has focused on landscape and the invisible histories of the land. Her current project, “Silk Road Songbook (SRS),” weaves song into landscape, and facilitates the creation of grass roots songs that channel local voices of resiliency and determination along an ancient Eurasian trade route. Chen’s artwork has been shown across North and South America, East Asia and Europe. Her writing has appeared in publications in the U.K., Canada, the U.S. and China.
