BRICS leaders agreed on Thursday to invite six countries, namely Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), to join the group.

8月24日，金砖国家领导人宣布，邀请阿根廷、埃及、埃塞俄比亚、伊朗、沙特、阿联酋正式成为金砖大家庭成员。

The six countries' membership will take effect on Jan. 1, 2024, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced at a press conference during the 15th BRICS Summit.

Speaking at the press conference, Chinese President Xi Jinping called the BRICS expansion historic and a new starting point for BRICS cooperation.

The expansion reflects the resolution of the BRICS countries to unite and cooperate with other developing countries, meets the expectations of the international community, and serves the common interests of emerging markets and developing countries, Xi stressed.

习近平强调，这次扩员体现了金砖国家同发展中国家团结合作的决心，符合国际社会期待，符合新兴市场国家和发展中国家共同利益。

Despite public concerns and raging opposition from both home and abroad, Japan started releasing nuclear-contaminated wastewater from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean on Thursday.

Donald Trump surrendered Thursday at the Fulton County jail on more than a dozen charges stemming from his efforts to reverse Georgia’s 2020 election results, the fourth time this year the former president has faced criminal charges.

Viral dog Cheems Balltze has died at 12 following a battle with cancer.

The Shiba Inu, also known as "Ball Ball," died on Friday after falling asleep during a thoracentesis surgery and never waking up, his owner announced to the dog's nearly 800,000 followers on Instagram.

这只柴犬也叫“球球”，18日，它在一场胸腔手术中去世。它的主人在Instagram上向近80万粉丝宣布了这一消息。

The chubby dog with a “round smiling face” was loved by many, his owner said. She asked fans not to be sad but instead to “remember the joy that Balltze brought to the world.”

Ball Ball, who lived in Hong Kong, rose to fame in 2017 after an Instagram user commented that he “looks like Cheese,” the dog’s website says – an incident that later established his stage name “Cheems” or “Cheemsburger”. His owner had begun posting pictures of him on Instagram two years earlier, to document his moods.
