Pakistani-American artist Huma Bhabha is known for her “character” sculptures that combine primitive mythology with dystopian science fiction, agony with humor, in a totemic manner. She also overlays drawings onto her print or photographic works, with added collage elements from calendars or magazines, to create intricately layered and absurdly poetic paper works. In Untitled, for instance, a hair-covered figure created from layered pictures and brushstrokes emerge out of an unsettling shade of green. With a pair of hollow, white eye sockets, it is designated as a visage or a mask. It brings to mind scrutiny from ancient times and at the same time forewarning of future ecological disasters, mirroring our innermost emotions.

About Artist

Huma Bhabha

Born in 1962. Her work addresses themes of memory, war, displacement, and the pervasive histories of colonialism. Using found materials and the detritus of everyday life, she creates haunting human figures that hover between abstraction and figuration, monumentality and entropy. While her formal vocabulary is distinctly her own, Bhabha embraces a post-modern hybridity that spans centuries, geography, art-historical traditions and cultural associations. Her work includes references to ancient Greek Kouroi, Gandharan Buddhas, African sculpture and Egyptian reliquary. At the same time, it remains insistently modern, looking to Giacometti, Picasso and Rauschenberg for inspiration, as well as to science fiction, horror movies, and popular novels.

Bhabha’s work is currently included in “Hi Woman!”, curated by Francesco Bonami, at Museo Palazzo Pretorio, Prato (IT) through March; “Flesh Arranges Itself Differently” at the Hunterian, University of Glasgow (GB) through April; “A Decade of Acquisitions of Works on Paper” at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (CA) until May; and “Our whole, unruly selves” at the San José Museum of Art (CA) through June. She is also currently the subject of a solo exhibition curated by Nicholas Baume at Fundación Casa Wabi, Puerto Escondido (MX), which features sculptures made while in residence.
