Global Gothic or Literature of the Strange?: Traveling Literary Knowledges

Born from different historical and cultural backgrounds, the English Gothic and the Chinese zhiguai (records of the strange) yet have surprising consonances in their gendered narrative of the supernatural and violation of cultural taboos. However, to render this cross-cultural affinity intelligible at once provokes the question of how to synthesize literary knowledges rooted in heterogeneous local cultures. Given the cultural hegemony of Anglophone literature, global gothic seems to be the obvious umbrella term to integrate Asian literary narratives of the supernatural and has been actively used so in the promotion and self-labeling of some Japanese and Hong Kong horror films which can trace back to a literary tradition influenced by the Chinese zhiguai. However, an interpretive lens derived solely from the Gothic paradigm frequently fails to address some of the most crucial tenets of this body of Chinese literature of the strange, and consequently scholars of Chinese zhiguai have either borrowed other literary theories from the West or limited their theorization strictly within the context of Chinese literary tradition without any cross-cultural reference. Reflecting on the benefits and hazards of both strategies, I propose a synthesis of literary knowledges from both the Gothic and the zhiguai paradigms that may be especially helpful when dealing with strange narratives produced outside of the first world or in cultural hybrid zones.

Reading as Complicity: Reading Literary Texts in South Africa’s Democratic Transition

This paper uses the South African writer Mark Behr’s novel The Smell of Apples (1993) as a case to indicate a possible interpretation of “reading” as a complicit yet politically effective gesture. Written around the historical period of South Africa’s transition from the apartheid government’s rule to the new democracy, the novel places both the reader and the writer in complicit positions. By reading the novel against social discourses of “confession” and “reconciliation” in its historical context, I suggest that literary texts can be an open space where complicities of both the reader and the writer will in fact lead to wider public responsibilities in the future.

On (Not) Reading T. S. Eliot: the Chinese Misty Moderns and the Politics of Reading

‘The lengthened shadow of a man / Is history’, so T. S. Eliot parodies Emerson in ‘Sweeney Agonistes’. In choosing ‘history’ over the ‘institution’ in Emerson’s text, Eliot sabotages the stronghold of history by introducing the more disruptive modernist temporality, and the modernist tension with history and tradition was no less felt among the underground poets known as the ‘misty poets’ in China in the late 1970s and the 1980s. This study revisits Mang Ke’s collection Sunflower in the Sun (1988), in which Eliot’s distilled, timeless imagery in ‘Ash-Wednesday’ and Four Quartets is radically and unmistakably transformed. The influence of English modernism and Eliot in particular is strongly perceived in the text, yet MangKe would frequently underplay or even dismiss such an influence mediated by the reading act. The denial, as would be argued, evinces as much the poetic self-fashioning of immediacy and spontaneity as an anxiety about the accused derivativeness of contemporary Chinese poetry1. Furthermore, it attests to the recalcitrant resistance against being confiscated or appropriated by any familiar symbolic systems.

Differences, Idiosyncrasies and Shared Humanity: Reconceptualising the Reader Cohort of Crossover Literature

Crossover literature, as a group of texts that attracts both children and adults, has drawn much attention since the 1990s. This paper contextualises contemporary crossover texts against the backdrop of the book industry, the hybridising of child and adult cultures, and the paradigm shift in childhood studies. Crossover literature is a group of texts that is likely to be infused with an ethos of the kinship model of childhood, which then encourages its child and adult readers to focus on their differences, idiosyncrasies, and shared humanity. The argument is then illustrated with a close analysis of Anthony Browne’s The Big Baby (1995), which focuses on how different models of childhood are juxtaposed and contrasted against one another, and how the text is infused with an egalitarian and respectful view of children.
