Put the Glass Down 

放下手中的杯子


Professor began his class by holding up a glass with some water in it. He held it up for all to see and asked the students, "How much do you think this glass weighs?"

教授拿起一个装着水的杯子开始了他的课。他举起杯子让所有在座的学生看,然后问他们:“你们认为这个杯子有多重?”


50g!..."100g!"..."125g!"..the students answered.

“50克!”“100克!”“125克!”…学生纷纷答道。


"I really don't know unless I weigh it," said the professor, "but, my question is: What would happen if I held it up like this for a few minutes?"

“除非我称一下,否则我真不知道它有多重。”教授说但我的问题是:如果我这样拿着杯子几分钟,结果会怎样?”


"Nothing." The students said.

“不会怎么样。”学生回答。


"OK. What would happen if I held it up like this for an hour?" the professor asked.

“那好。如果像这样拿着杯子,持续一个小时,又会怎样?”教授再次发问。


"Your arm would begin to ache," said one of the students.

“您的胳膊会有点酸痛。”一名学生回答。


"You're right. Now what would happen if I held it for a day?"

“说得对。如果我像这样拿着杯子一整天会怎样呢?”


"Your arm could go numb, you might have severe muscle stress and paralysis and have to go to hospital for sure!" Ventured another student. All the students laughed.

“那您的胳膊肯定会变得麻木,说不定肌肉会严重紧张而麻痹,到时肯定得去医院。”另一名学生大胆说道。所有学生都大笑起来。


"Very good! But during all this, did the weight of the glass change? " asked the professor.

“很好。但在这期间,杯子的重量发生变化了吗?”教授问道。


No was the answer.

答案是“没有”。


"Then what caused the arm ache and the muscle stress?"

“那是什么导致胳膊酸痛、肌肉紧张的呢?”


The students were puzzled.

学生们满是诧异。


"What should I do now to come out of pain?" asked the professor again.

“如果现在我想不再痒痛,我该怎么做?”教授再次问道。


"Put the glass down!" said one of the students.

“把杯子放下。”其中一名学生回答。


"Exactly!" said the professor.

“正是。”教授说道。


"Life's problems are something like this. Hold it for a few minutes in your head and they seem OK. Think of them for a long time and they begin to ache. Hold it even longer and they begin to paralyze you. You will not be able to do anything."

“生活中的问题就像我手中的杯子,埋在心里几分钟没有关系,如果长时间地想着这些问题,它们就可能使你麻痹,那时你就什么事也干不了了。”


"It's important to think of the challenges or problems in your life. But even more important is to 'put them down' at the end of every day before you go to sleep. That way, you are not stressed, you wake up every day fresh and strong and can handle any issue, any challenge that comes your way!"

“生活中的挑战和问题固然要重视,但更重要的是在一天结束准备睡觉时要把这些问题都放下。这样,你才不会感到有压力,每天早晨醒来才能鲜活有力,并能迎接人生道路上的任何问题和挑战。”


"So, when you leave office today, remember, friend, to 'Put the glass down today!'"

“所以,朋友,今天当你离开办公室的时候,要记得‘放下手中的杯子!’”
