Shocking moment a busy highway bridge suddenly collapses during rush hours after 'a seriously overloaded lorry drove onto it' in China

Daily Mail

A busy highway bridge has collapsed in eastern China during rush hours, according to local media.

The flyover fell apart this evening when cars and trucks drove on it, footage released by state media shows.

The accident took place at 6pm in Wuxi, a major city of Jiangsu Province on China's eastern coast, reported People's Daily through its official social media account.

The overpass is part of the 312 National Expressway.

The section that gave way was along the direction bound for Shanghai, which is about two hours away by car.

The report said some cars which were passing under the bridge were smashed and trapped.

State newspaper Global Times said three cars were stranded under the debris.

One of them had been parked there and was empty, the outlet wrote on Twitter-style Weibo.

Footage from China's state broadcaster CCTV shows rescue workers trying to free people stuck in a mangled vehicle.

Other dashcam clips show the moment the structure one side of the bridge gave way when cars approached it.

The transport authority of Jiangsu said the accident was likely to have been caused by a 'seriously overloaded' lorry which was driving on it, said China Transport Post.

The authorities are yet to announce if there are any casualties.

The motorway, covering 4,967 kilometres (3,086 miles), runs across China from the east to the west, connecting Shanghai with Xinjiang.
