主讲人简介

海尔斯教授1966年毕业于罗切斯特理工学院，获化学学士学位；1969年在加州理工学院获得化学硕士学位；1977年在罗切斯特大学获得英语文学专业的博士。曾先后任教于达特茅斯学院、加州理工学院、密苏里大学罗拉分校、爱荷华大学、加州大学洛杉矶分校。

海尔斯教授研究领域主要关注文学与科学、技术的关系，电子文学及20世纪以来的美国文学等，其著作内容勾连了生物学、神经科学、信息技术科学、控制论、人工智能、计算机及软件科学、文学、哲学等多个学科，理论脉络根植于控制论、文本理论、批评理论、文学理论、结构主义、解构主义等多个领域，获得了广泛关注和诸多荣誉，其中包括2015年当选美国艺术与科学院院士。

她的代表性著作包括：How We Became Posthuman: Virtual Bodies in Cybernetics, Literature and Informatics (1999)；Writing Machines, (2002) ；My Mother Was a Computer: Digital Subjects and Literary Texts (2005)；Electronic Literature: New Horizons for the Literary, (2008) ；How We Think: Digital Media and Contemporary Technogenesis,(2012)；以及Unthought： The Power of the Cognitive Nonconscious（2017）。

The Postprint Production of The Silent History: Entwining Media and Human Obsolescence

讲座简介

During the long centuries of print, many aspects of Western culture were influenced by assumptions firmly tied to print conventions.  Starting around 1950, cognitive technologies began penetrating the printing industry, initiating the postprint era.  With the advent of the digital came a new kind of partial illiteracy, in which many (formerly) literate readers could access only the surface of the digital inscription, unable to read the deeper layers of code.  In addition, digital algorithms began increasingly to intrude upon writing and reading practices through such practices as robo-writing, collating filtering algorithms that predicted readers’ preferences, and other digital appropriations of human-created inscriptions.  These conditions set the stage for a crisis in a certain concept of the human, in which “human” was strongly identified with the creation and understanding of alphabetic language.  This talk will explore the anxieties unleashed by the crisis through the postprint production, The Silent History, and through contemporary practices of asemic writing.
