How to Use "V+好" Like a Native?

SilkMandarin 2020-08-22

Hello, everyone! This is Jasmine from Silk Mandarin.

Welcome to join Silk Mandarin today to solve your Chinese grammatical puzzle.

Today, I'm gonna introduce you how to maximize the application of the HSK3 structure "V+好".

Listen the audio below to learn more about this structure:

In Chinese, we use two structures to say finish doing something. The first one that you probably know is "V+完".

For instance, we say:
- 我写完作业了。(Wǒ xiě wán zuòyè le) I finished doing my homework.

- 妈妈做完饭了。(Māmā zuò wán fàn le) Mom finished cooking.

This structure simply means finish to do something, regardless of the good or bad result.

However, if you only want to express that you complete something with a satisfying result, you can choose the structure V+好.

For example:

- 我做好作业了!(Wǒ zuò hǎo zuòyè le)

- 妈妈做好饭了!(Māmā zuò hǎo fàn le)

Do you see? These examples usually convey a cheerful tone to show satisfaction.

That's probably what you've learned about this grammar.

However, today I'm gonna help you to apply V+more in your daily Chinese expressions.

In spoken Chinese, V+好 (+Ois actually a very powerful and practical structure.

Let's see the following examples:

1. 我没想好要不要去。

(Wǒ méi xiǎng hǎo yào bu yào qù.)

(I haven't decided to go or not.)

2. 晚上去看电影吧,我买好票了。

(Wǎnshang qù kàndiànyǐng ba, wǒ mǎi hǎo piào le.)

(Let's watch the movie this evening, I got the tickets.)

3. 你们准备好了吗?

(Nǐmen zhǔnbèi hǎo le ma?)

(Are you ready?)

In the scenarios above, you can see that the most natural Chinese equivalence of the English expressions is V+好(+O). Chinese people use this structure to express "decide", "buy and get something" and "ready".

Got it?

You will definitely make your expressions more native!
