Antonio Obá

Curator: Cyril Kuizhen Rao

Antonio Obá investigates the influence and contradictions within the cultural construction of Brazil, giving rise to an act of resistance and reflection on the idea of national identity. Obá utilizes icons presented in Brazilian culture as allusions to racial and political identity, these iconic historical and sometimes religious subjects are explored within his sculpture, painting, installations, and performance. With his experience and contemporary conceptions of faith, Obá’s research establishes an interconnection of thoughts that combines our current times with the old times erased by history.

As the artist's debut show in an Asian institution, the exhibition will feature works that Obá has created for the past few years, as well as his new series of works, including oil paintings, installation and drawings on paper. The exhibition aims to investigate the artist's reflections and enquiries into colonialism and slavery.

The Endless Garment

Curator: Jeppe Ugelvig, Poppy Dongxue Wu

Taking South China Sea as its starting point, ‘The Endless Garment’ examines the fashion production in this region. The exhibition project consists of two parts: the first part was opened at X Museum in spring time in 2021. In this coming December, X Museum will present the second part of ‘The Endless Garment’.

The exhibition will continue the research of the first part, bringing together the works of more than 20 designers and artists from the Greater China region and Southeast Asian countries. Tackling themes such as authorship, authenticity, labor, heritage, and identity, the exhibition skips fashion’s mainstream purview to instead focus on its more marginal spaces of production. By presenting diaspora fashion practices from around the world alongside fashion businesses from the region, the project sets out to complicate ‘Asia’ as a cultural, geographical, and economic category, while deepening the stories, questions, and sensibilities behind it.

The project will continue throughout 2021 and culminate in a publication and a conclusive exhibition. Published in collaboration with the journal for fashion criticism Viscose, the publication will be distributed worldwide in Spring 2022.

Trey Abdella

Curator: Michael Xufu Huang

In Trey Abdella's works, the bright color, cartoonish visual narrative, and surrealist compositions can easily increase audiences’ empathy with them.

Immersing himself in contemporary culture, Abdella assembles a wide and diverse references in his large scale paintings, from Baroque realism, to classic cartoon language, to our digital culture. Acrylic paint is the basis of all his works, sometimes interspersed with actual materials such as glue, glass and sequins, transforming the canvas into an almost three-dimensional work. The blurring of the line between reality and fiction in Abdella's paintings reflects the enormous visual and informational impact that today's youth are experiencing due to the ubiquity of social media. As the artist’s first solo exhibition in China, the show will feature his new paintings that created specifically for this exhibition.

Group Exhibition of Female Sculpture Artists

Curator: Cyril Kuizhen Rao

For this group exhibition, X Museum focuses on the practice of female artists from China and abroad. Some of them will create new works in accordance with the space and discourse of this exhibition.

Rooted in the theme of ‘volatile bodies’, the exhibition will discuss, through sculpture and installation, how the ‘body’ can be seen as a place of encounters where biology, materials, and personal narratives take place and convene. Based on the feminist theories of the Australian philosopher Elizabeth Grosz, the exhibition takes on an interdisciplinary approach, discussing modern ecological, feminist and biological perspectives and reflecting on the relationship between female sensibilities and the human body. The exhibition aims to reveal the fragility of a society based on individualism and constant change, and the inherent connections between humankind, gender, nature and the body.

Mika Rottenberg

Curator: Poppy Dongxue Wu

Argentine-Israeli artist Mika Rottenberg is an iconic figure in contemporary video art scene. Adopting both cinematic and sculptural approaches, she seeks out locations around the world where specific systems of production and commerce are in place, such as a pearl factory in China, and a Calexico border town. In her surreal video works and kinetic installations, Mika Rottenberg highlights the female body found in the production mechanisms. Through the editing process, and with footage from sets built in her studio, Rottenberg connects seemingly disparate places and things to create elaborate and subversive visual narratives. By weaving fact and fiction together, she highlights the inherent beauty and absurdity of our contemporary existence.

This exhibition will be the premiere of the artist's new work ‘Remote’ in China. Rottenberg took up the project when lockdown begins. It’s the artist’s first full-length feature.

Javier Calleja

The glass-eyed figures created by Spanish artist Javier Calleja have received widespread acclaim for their exaggerated head shapes, bright and innocent eyes, as well as their frank and humorous emotions.

Calleja's images of wide-eyed boys reflect the artist's own feelings and experiences. The figures evolve from sketches to paintings and sculptures, depicting boys in a transitional period of adolescence and youth. With their oversized watery eyes and muted red cheeks, these boys look like little heroes who have just overcome adversity and are about to smile again after crying.

Over the past few years, the character has been a hit in Europe and Asia. In the year of 2022, X Museum will bring this innocent boy into the museum space and invite you to enter into his inner world.

Throughout art history, female collectors have contributed immensely to the development of art institutes, such as Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, former founder of the Whitney Museum in the USA, and Peggy Guggenheim from the Guggenheim family. They all pushed forward the history of modern art with their art collections and supports for art institutes.

X Museum, co-founded by female entrepreneur Theresa Tse, seeks to generate cultural awareness of female thoughts, experience, and action in the arts. The exhibition will showcase a selection of works, to understand museum collection in the perspective of a female collector.
