Everything I Never Told You  was written by Celeste Ng (Chinese Name: 吴绮诗), who is an American writer and novelist. 

It tells the story of a girl called Lydia and her family. By looking for the perpetrator of her death, the story reveals the deep secrets under the surface of a calm sea. 

The story happened in a small town of Ohio in the 1970s. There are five people in Lydia's family. Her father was an American-born Chinese man called James Lee. Her mother was a local American woman called Marilyn Lee. Lydia was their second but favorite child. She had an elder brother Nath and a younger sister Hannah. 

Lydia loved her parents, especially her mother Marilyn. When she was only 5, her mother decided to leave home and to continue her study in medical science. Marilyn’s leaving made Lydia upset and desperate. Lydia decided to obey all of her mother’s words. 

Both James and Marilyn imposed their unachievable dreams upon Lydia. Although Lydia's answer was always “yes”, she resisted all of them deep inside. Her brother Nath’s leaving for Harvard was the last straw that broke the camel’s back. Her parents never knew Lydia’s grievous depression until Lydia’s death.

却像平静的海面下隐藏着巨大的冰山，

所有的相关人和事看似杂乱无章，

然而，如洋葱一层一层地慢慢拨开，

一直带你找到Lydia死亡的真相-----

配不上父母的野心，也辜负了所受的苦难。

“我们终此一生，就是要摆脱他人的期待，找到真正的自己”

但是谈何容易呢？

人在江湖，身不由己。

想到最近看过的一部电影《摔跤吧！爸爸》，

里面的女儿们都肩负着父母的厚望，

和Lydia不同的是，她们有能力有天赋最终取得了成功。

再看看《欢乐颂 2》里的几个角色，哪个在爱别人的同时，失去了自己？

当爱成为枷锁，

所有的一切都让人难过。

在这本小说里，

每个人都可以或多或少找到自己的影子，
