最近看到一句话：

Yes, I think, on balance, I’ll be happy with the relationship we’re likely to have.

你会怎么理解？

“是的，我认为，如果能保持平衡的话，我会对我们即将拥有的这段关系感到开心。”

有没有被我猜中？

这样的理解虽然看起来很正确，但实际上是错的。关键在on balance这个你以为你懂，但其实你并不懂的短语。

请不要想当然，认为它就是“保持平衡的状态”。作为固定短语，on balance的真正意思是：考虑了所有因素之后，总体来说如何如何。换言之，它跟all things considered是一个意思。

之前，我提到过三次定律。就是这么巧，这个on balance对我来说也属于这种情况。我已经很久很久没见过这个短语了，所以那天看到第一个例句，顿了一下才反应过来。而就在看到这句话的同一周，我又看到这么一段：

First, look at your relationship over time. On balance, do you feel heard, appreciated, effective within the relationship? On balance, do you feel you’re getting what you want? Any one incident may not be that important in the grand scheme of things, but is there a pattern of your being discounted and dismissed, or would you say the relationship is characterized by your being heard and respected?

虽说文章的话题有共同之处，都在讲人际关系，难免会出现类似或相同的表述，但在我至少十年没见过一个短语之后，同一周里突然见到三次，还是很不可思议的！！！

如果你是好奇宝宝，应该还会有两个问题：1. 如果我就是想说“保持平衡”，咋办？2.on balance感觉跟“总体来说”八竿子打不着，怎么记啊？

答案很简单：

1. in balance，不是on balance。 例句：It's important to keep your life in balance. 

2. on the whole也是“总体来说”，这个短语肯定熟悉吧？通过on把两者联系起来，就容易记了。再说，考虑所有因素（all things considered），就是为了更好地做取舍，做出更“平衡”的决定，符合balance的字面意思。所以，all things considered = on balance = 总体来说。
