The Reflective Leader: Keys To Improve Your Performance In 2022

Forbes

According to a Yoruba proverb, “When a child falls, he looks forward, but when an adult falls, he looks behind.” The moral of the proverb is that a child does not pause and reflect on what made him fall, so it happens again. Adults look behind to see what made them stumble and make adjustments to prevent a recurrence. Simply, experience is not what makes us grow; it is evaluated experience—to pause, reflect, and act.

It is that time when people begin to make New Year resolutions. Unfortunately, most of these resolutions fall short because they focus on actions and end goals rather than the experiences and underlying beliefs needed to achieve the results. Confucius, the Chinese philosopher, shared some tools that leaders can leverage in 2022 to improve their leadership performance. “By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience which is bitterest.” Confucius ranks self-reflection, not experience, as the best way to learn and grow. Unfortunately, due to the fast-changing technology-driven world, most leaders have lost the art of self-reflection as a tool to improve their performance.

In the wise words of  Margaret J. Wheatley, an American writer, teacher, and speaker, “Without reflection, we go blindly on our way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful.” As 2021 winds down and 2022 comes in view, the world’s challenges—the pandemic, chip shortages, and supply chain constraints are getting more complex. Also, the great resignation, hot housing market, war on talent, and the future of work are forces leaders must contend with.  Now is the time for leaders to pause and reflect on the previous year and transform their learnings into valuable insights that can accelerate their growth and development. Below are four tips to help you become a more reflective leader and improve your performance in the New Year:

#1 Begin with the end in mind: Bronnie Ware, the international bestselling author of "The Top Five Regrets of the Dying," shared that the top regret people had on their death bed was, "I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me." With this in mind, what is your end goal? What have you always wanted to do but haven't done yet?  What is getting in the way? What are you going to do about it in 2022?

#2 Schedule self-reflection time on your calendar: The secret of your success lies in your daily routine. Being intentional about scheduling time for daily self-reflection will create new insights that drive new behaviors and results.

Dan Cathy, the Chairman of Chick-fil-A, tweeted, “We live in a fast-paced world. More and more, I’m learning that to remain effective as a leader, I need to schedule times of rest and reflection.” He shared more details in an interview with John Maxwell. Cathy sets aside half a day every two weeks and two to three days a year for self-reflection. If half a day doesn’t work for you, what about scheduling 15 minutes a day for a start?

#3 Follow the 80/20 rule: You will never have enough time to attend every meeting, put out fires, and get all the work done. Adopting the 80/20 rule could help you determine where to invest your energy. The rule suggests that 20 percent of your activities will account for 80 percent of your results. Effective leaders prioritize the top 20% to ensure the longevity of their businesses and delegate the rest.

#4 Measure what matters: What you measure shifts your mindset, drives behaviors, and determines the results you see in your life. John Doerr, the New York Times Bestseller author, “Measure What Matters,” wrote how Google, Bono, and the Gates Foundation exceeded expectations through a simple goal-setting technique called OKRs—objectives and key results.

Closing: Apples fall from the tree all the time, but Isaac Newton pondered why apples fall straight to the ground (rather than sideways or upward). His insights inspired him to develop the law of universal gravitation and his three laws of motion. When leaders are not self-reflective, their vision becomes blurry, and organizations become bloated. They seek compromise instead of prioritizing, become lethargic in executing, remain stuck in old thinking, and become grounded by indecision.

During these times of unprecedented change, don’t let busyness become an excuse not to pause and reflect on the year that has passed and prepare for the new year ahead—your success depends on it.

This week, find some time to reflect on the following questions: (1) Where am I headed? (2) Do I have a scheduled daily self-reflection practice? (3) What is most important?  And, what am I willing to give up to become the person I want to be? What should I do to be the person I want to be?

The Reflective Leader: Keys To Improve Your Performance In 2022

Forbes

According to a Yoruba proverb, “When a child falls, he looks forward, but when an adult falls, he looks behind.” The moral of the proverb is that a child does not pause and reflect on what made him fall, so it happens again. Adults look behind to see what made them stumble and make adjustments to prevent a recurrence. Simply, experience is not what makes us grow; it is evaluated experience—to pause, reflect, and act.

proverb

表示“谚语,格言”,英文解释为“a short sentence, etc., usually known by many people, stating something commonly experienced or giving advice”举个🌰:

The appetite, says the proverb, grows with eating.

moral

作名词,表示“道德教训;寓意”,英文解释为“The moral of a story, event, or experience is the message that you understand from it about how you should or should not behave”举个🌰:

And the moral of the story is that honesty is always the best policy.

stumble

1)作名词,表示“犯错;失足”,英文解释为“a false step, trip, or blunder / the act of stumbling”。

2)作动词,表示“踉跄;绊脚”,英文解释为“If you stumble, you put your foot down awkwardly while you are walking or running and nearly fall over.”

He stumbled and almost fell.

3)固定搭配:stumble on / across / upon sth,表示“偶然发现(碰见)”,英文解释为“to find or discover something by chance and unexpectedly”举个🌰:

Researchers have stumbled across a drug that may help patients with Parkinson's disease.

Unfortunately, due to the fast-changing technology-driven world, most leaders have lost the art of self-reflection as a tool to improve their performance.

resolution

1)表示“决议”,英文解释为“A resolution is a formal decision made at a meeting by means of a vote.”

He replied that the UN had passed two major resolutions

2)表示“决心,决定”,英文解释为“If you make a resolution, you decide to try very hard to do something.”

They made a resolution to lose all the weight gained during the Christmas holidays.

underlying

And what might be the underlying significance of these supposedly random acts?

为基础的”,英文解释为“used to describe something on which something else is based”举个🌰:

The price of the investment fell below the value of the underlying assets.

art

熟词僻义,表示“技术,技巧;本领”,英文解释为“a skill or special ability”如:the art of conversation 会话技巧,举个🌰:

Getting him to go out is quite an art (= needs special skill).

Below are four tips to help you become a more reflective leader and improve your performance in the New Year:

unintended

At the age of nine, he had the death of both parents to contend with.

If half a day doesn't work for you, what about scheduling 15 minutes a day for a start?

The Court of Appeal set aside his conviction.

#3 Follow the 80/20 rule: You will never have enough time to attend every meeting, put out fires, and get all the work done. Adopting the 80/20 rule could help you determine where to invest your energy. The rule suggests that 20 percent of your activities will account for 80 percent of your results. Effective leaders prioritize the top 20% to ensure the longevity of their businesses and delegate the rest.

prioritize/prioritise

1)表示“按重要性排列;划分优先顺序”,英文解释为“to put tasks, problems, etc. in order of importance, so that you can deal with the most important first”举个🌰:

Closing: Apples fall from the tree all the time, but Isaac Newton pondered why apples fall straight to the ground (rather than sideways or upward). His insights inspired him to develop the law of universal gravitation and his three laws of motion. When leaders are not self-reflective, their vision becomes blurry, and organizations become bloated. They seek compromise instead of prioritizing, become lethargic in executing, remain stuck in old thinking, and become grounded by indecision.
