My Grandpa Stole My Girlfriend. She Wanted Money

Hey, guys! I’m Nick. I wanna tell you a story about how somebody really close to me stole my girlfriend. And if you think that there is nothing special about that and that this happens often, wait until I tell you who it was.

I met Jess a year ago when I was in my first year of college. We happened to be taking the same economy class and were sitting next to each other. She was always surrounded by her girlfriends, and she definitely stood out in the crowd. Once I saw her I knew she was the girl of my dreams.

But I was definitely not self-confident enough to go up to her. I was never a nerd, but I always studied really well, and I don't think I was ugly or anything. I just thought it would never happen that such a nice and ideal girl would prefer an ordinary guy like me, but I was lucky to be wrong, and during our third or fourth economy lecture, Jess wrote me a note on a piece of paper, suggesting that the two of us have lunch together.

After that, we started dating and I was really happy about that, of course. The only thing that bothered me a bit was the way that other guys would look at Jess, you know, with undisguised interest. She kept saying that I had nothing to be worried about and I knew myself that it was probably something that you get along with having a hot girlfriend. I guess I was too jealous and afraid to lose her.
During our spring break, I decided to surprise and impress Jess. You see, it’s not that my family is extremely wealthy, but we’re doing pretty well, and we, or rather my grandpa has this cool beach house with, as he used to say, an ocean in the back yard. So, I made sure that he was fine with me taking Jess there for a nice romantic weekend, and without saying a word about where we were going, I drove us there. You should’ve seen her eyes wide-open when she saw that fascinating view and her face full of excitement when I told her that the house was totally ours for the next couple of days.

I was barbequing on the porch near the back door while she was sunbathing not far from me on the sand. I was pretty confident that this vacation was going to become the first among many amazing weekends I was going to spend together with Jess. But when the evening had come and when the candles and the fireplace were already lit, we suddenly heard somebody entering through the front door.

It was my grandpa. It turned out that he had forgotten that I was staying at the beach house by myself for the weekend – he thought I was talking about the next one. He said he had some business errands in town and that’s why he had to stop at the beach house for the night. He said he was really sorry to disturb us and so on, and even though he had sort of spoiled the whole idea of a romantic weekend, I couldn’t just kick him out of his own house when it was already dark outside, right.

Just to help you understand, my grandfather is far from a gray-haired old man who moves with the help of a cane and laments for his whole life that his pension is barely enough, etc. He looks terrific at 65; he goes to the gym, he wears modern clothes, he has a nice car, and he uses the latest gadgets. My granny died a really long time ago and since then, he's been married three more times and each of his new wives was younger than the previous one. Actually, I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I said that he could easily pass as my dad.

I’ve always admired my grandpa and maybe envied him to some extent because I was not as cool as he was. And this actually never bothered me until that evening. You see, just as soon as he saw Jess, he turned on his charm and began giving her various complements. She seemed to be a bit dazed and flattered. And she laughed at his jokes and also gave him compliments about the house and stuff. I thought that maybe she just didn’t want to be rude. I mean, he was the first member of my family she'd ever met.

But then, you know, something completely wrong happened with me. It was after we had dinner. There was a piano right there, and grandpa was really good at playing it. At some point, Jess mentioned in passing that she used to play with her dad when she was a little girl, and grandpa suggested that the two of them play four-hands. I don’t know whether it was the firelight, or whether I was annoyed with grandpa, who didn’t want to just go to sleep and give us some time for just the two of us, or if it was their four-hand piano playing, and the fact they were sitting really close to each other, but I suddenly blew a fuse.
