I Have Cerebral Palsy But It Didn't Stop Me From Saving My Dad

Hi, guys! My name is Chelsie. I'm 13 years old and I think I have a story worth sharing. If you want to know what it's like to be on the edge of death and there is no one there to help you out, and then, to make it through... stay with me.

The thing is... I was born with cerebral palsy, ironically into a family of two crazy sports lovers. My father is an expert skier, while my mother is a professional climber. It must have been really hard for them to accept their situation, but they did it and never gave up. My parents have done everything in their power to not to make me feel like I have a disability.

I've played a lot of sports since early childhood – swimming, skiing, tennis, according my physical capacities, of course.  Also, every summer we all go hiking together, that's our unbroken tradition. I would always eagerly wait for the moment when we finally chose a new destination. The last time the place was drawn, it was The Pacific Crest trail. We definitely had no idea that that trip would turn all of our lives upside-down.

When I found out where we were going, I was the happiest person in the world. Even though my mom was a little unsure, because it was going to be a hard distance, my dad and I managed to persuade her.

And there we were with our insanely heavy backpacks on the way to our camp. It wasn't easy, but I was doing pretty well, until I suddenly lost my balance and tripped over a stone. I sprained my ankle, so now I was walking and hobbling even more than usual. My parents tried to encourage me and to cheer me up, but I heard mom whisper to dad: "It's too much for her, should we go back?" Hearing these words let me down completely. Anybody could fall on the road! Not a big deal!

Anyway, we reached our first stop soon after that. The views were wonderful, but I didn't feel like walking around. People were staring and pointing fingers at me, as usual, which made me feel even more miserable. I was just sitting under a tree when my dad came up to me with a mysterious expression on his face. He said: ""Do you want to go on a secret trip? Just you and me?""  That was definitely a “Yeap, captain!' We decided to walk around a bit and to not tell mom where we were going, She was busy with organizing the tent and making dinner anyway.

So, we took the camera and bottles of water, and started off. We had such a wonderful time! We took pictures of rocks and mountains, and I had almost forgotten about the morning accident on the road. I was also looking forward to showing those beautiful pictures to my mom.

It was a long walk, so we were about to go home when we saw an incredible view. There was a cliff on a high rock, and there were beautiful flowers down below, there was snow. My dad and I were really impressed. I think it was the most gorgeous thing I have ever seen in my life! So dad started taking hundreds of pictures from various angles. But suddenly he stumbled and slipped down right off the cliff. It happened so fast that it took me a few seconds to realize what had happened. My heart sank.

I dropped down to the ground at the edge of the cliff and started calling for my father. A few minutes later I saw him trying to crawl up, moaning. I was so happy he was alive, but there was no time to lose! I had to do something to get him out. It was a really steep descent and it turned out that he had broken his leg, so after several tries to pull him out, it was obvious that we needed help.

But everything was working against us. Mobile phones had no service. It was already getting dark, and we were really far from the camp. And as I had cerebral palsy together with a morning injury of my own, I couldn't move properly. Besides, I was not sure if I could remember exactly how to get back to the camp.

I burst into tears. I was in despair, because it seemed like there was nothing I could do to help my dad. But he kept saying: ' We will make it, Chelsie! It's gonna be ok!'

Suddenly I came up with an idea. I tore the grips off of our backpacks and tied them together to make a rope. Of course, I would not be able to pull my dad out myself, so I tied the rope to the tree. By some miracle, my dad managed to climb up the rope and get out, but it was completely dark by that time. We couldn't stay where we were because we had no tent or even warm clothes with us, so there was nothing left we could do but try to get back.

My dad could hardly walk, so I had to help him. I don't know how long we were walking, but finally we made our way out onto a wide road. And then, I saw a truck! I couldn't believe my eyes. It was amazing! We were exhausted, but I tried to encourage my dad to go faster.
