A topic page on the Chinese microblogging site titled 'Man assaults woman on the street' attracted more than 1.1 billion views and hundreds of thousands of comments.

In a rare move, cyber police in Sichuan initially appealed for the public's help online in identifying the exact location of the attack.

Dalian police today confirmed in a statement that the attack happened in the city's Ganjingzi district and a special task force has been launched to find the suspect.

However, their statement drew criticism from net users, who accused the police of low efficiency given that the victim had filed a report on Saturday after the attack.

They also questioned the extent of the woman's injuries, saying that she appeared to have suffered way worse than 'soft tissue damage' as described by police.

'Is your Internet finally working? Net users have almost solved the case for you,' another top-rated comment read.

'Merely soft tissue damage? I don't believe this,' one user said.

The woman told police that she didn't know the attacker and why he targeted her, according to The Paper citing a police source.
