VOA NEWS

May 11, 2016

From Washington, this is VOA news. I'm David DeForest reporting. Another win for Donald Trump

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has been projected to[预计] be the winner of a primary election[1] Tuesday in West Virginia[西佛吉尼亚州]

Key Senate Republicans[2] are warming up a bit to Trump's prospects for victory in November.

Mitch McConnell is the Senate Majority leader[3]: "We're looking forward to a meeting at his request later this week. I think most of our members believe that he's won the nomination the old-fashioned[老式的;过时的;守旧的] way. He got more votes than anybody else. And we respect the voices of the Republican primary voters[初选选民] across the country."

On the Democratic side, Senator Bernie Sanders hopes to beat front-runner[竞争中的领先者;赛跑中跑在前头的人] Hillary Clinton in West Virginia

Voters in Nebraska[内布拉斯加州] are also going to the polls.

President Barack Obama says he will visit Hiroshima[广岛市], Japan, late this month, becoming the first U.S. president to go to the city where in 1945 an American warplane dropped the world's first atomic bomb[原子弹] used in war.

For seven decades, American presidents have avoided visited Hiroshima and Nagasaki[长崎] apparently to avoid the impression that they are making an apology

White House spokesman Josh Earnest says the visit takes nothing away from the soldiers who fought in World War II

"There's also no diminishing[4] the important contribution of the greatest generation of Americans who didn't just save the United States, but rather saved the world, from tyranny[5]." :Josh Earnest.

The head of Bangladesh[孟加拉国]'s leading Islamist party was executed Wednesday on charges of genocide[6] and war crimes[战争罪行] linked to the nation's war for independence in 1971.

The nation's law minister says Motiur Rahman Nizami, the 73-year-old leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami[伊斯兰大会党] party, was hanged[7] at Dhaka's central jail.
