Laurelhurst Residences

Designed by Ibsen Nelsen in 1961, the layout of this home was very well considered but the character and flow between spaces wasn’t a good fit for the daily patterns of the new owners. High on the owner’s wish list were increased physical and visual connections between rooms and to the outdoors.

A central feature of the original design was a courtyard garden, experienced primarily through the living room. Careful reconsideration of the openings surrounding this space reframed it as a tranquil organizing element of the house, central not just to the living room but also to the entry, the daily circulation paths and the more informal spaces of the home.

Single pane windows were replaced and extended floor to ceiling. Upgraded insulation and high efficiency radiant floor heat allowed the removal of ductwork and low ceilings, dramatically reducing the home’s energy consumption.

The new project is updated and more livable but still respectful of the best elements of the original design.

Rock box karaoke

Designed within an existing early 20th century shell in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, this humble space was transformed into eleven Japanese style private karaoke rooms, a small bar and a larger room for groups. Three inhabitable, weathered, blackened wood boxes delineate long corridors which lead you into private rooms saturated in color emanating from light washed walls and fabric seating.

Slivers and fragments of colored light lead guests through the contrasting dark atmosphere of the public areas. Narrow windows reveal fragments of human activity from within. Rather than the adjacent street, the new entrance was designed to activate a neighborhood alley, leaving the minimal street frontage to reveal the energy of a typical box interior in lieu of the entry. Switchable glazing capable of being transparent or translucent, and a user controlled exterior speaker give the singers inside this box the option of entertaining the late night pedestrians.

Case inlet retreat

Nestled into a forested slope along the Case Inlet, this retreat opens to views of the Olympic Mountains and the Puget Sound. Set on a twenty-acre plot, the 2,600-square-foot building is anchored by a weathered, cedar-clad bedroom wing, a bold concrete cantilever projects the living and dining into the dense forest and toward the view.  The open-plan dining and living area features expansive views achieved through floor-to-ceiling glass walls. High ceilings evoke the feeling of sitting outdoors amidst the trees.

A broad flat roof hovers above the living areas and provides an upper-level terrace. Accessed via a steel staircase, which penetrates the overhanging roof plane, the terrace affords views of the Sound and access to the forest canopy.

The mostly opaque sleeping volume contrasts with the transparent living spaces. Small apertures penetrate the exterior of the bedroom volume, while larger opening including one over the master bath provide a ritual of bathing within the forest. An IPE deck slips from inside the kitchen into an open meadow to the south, separated only by large, sliding glass doors extending the sense of interior directly to the outdoors.

A balance of clean lines and natural materials, including wood, concrete and metal, this modest retreat is a welcome sanctuary from urban living.

Seabeck cabin

The Little House is nestled into a lush second growth forest on a north facing bluff overlooking Hood Canal with distant views to Dabob Bay. Designed to repurpose an existing foundation, the new building is just over 20 ft square. The simple form is abstracted against the forest – a stark exterior contrasting a warm bright interior.

The owners live full time in Houston, Texas but have shared many summers with family at a nearby property outside Seabeck. They loved the wildness of the southern Canal and imagined a small retreat here of their own. Early design discussions focused on creating a compact, modern structure that was both simple and inexpensive to build. Intentionally restrained on an existing footprint, the concept grew from this premise – a simple box with large carved openings in both the roof and walls that selectively embrace the views and natural light.

Visitors approach the site from the south. A thin canopy marks the entry and frames views of the Canal below. The more transparent north and west elevations pull the landscape and distant view into the space.  With primary views toward the water, the south and east elevations remain mostly solid, shielding views from the driveway and neighboring properties. Skylights carve into the roof, bringing light and views of the stars over the bed and into the shower.

Taut oxidized black cedar and blackened cement infill panels clad the exterior while lightly painted MDF panels and soft pine plywood warm and brighten the interior.

On a sunny western corner of the house a large patio reaches out into the landscape and connects the building to the larger site while serving as a jumping off point to the trail system wandering down to the water’s edge.

The small footprint ultimately served as an effective tool to govern the design process. Focus was placed on the essentials and extras were edited out by both desire and a very humble budget. The resulting project hopes to capture the essence of the modern cabin – small in size but much larger than its boundaries.
