There she goes! Ming Xi, 28, suffered an epic tumble at the 22nd annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show show which was held at the Mercedes Benz Arena in Shanghai on Monday

  • mishap表示"an unfortunate but not very serious event that happens someone",和下文出现的hitch意思差不多

Victoria's Secret Fashion Show was in Shanghai today, and not everything went without a hitch. Chinese model Ming Xi, 28, was left red-faced after she took a tumble on the catwalk, to the shock of the watching crowd.

Wearing a silver and blue outfit with elaborate floral headpiece, Ming slipped and fell flat on her face. Ming was wearing thigh high stiletto boots which may have got caught in her long flowing cape.

  • take a tumble强调的是突然摔倒a sudden fall。

  • slip表示accidentally slide and lose balance,滑倒

  • catch in/on表示“被卡住”,例如Her ankle caught on a root, and she almost lost her balance...

Laughing it off: Ming did her best to keep a smile on her face as she attempted to get up

She has been strutting her stuff for the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show since 2013. But Ming Xi momentarily lost composure as she suffered an epic tumble at the 22nd annual show which was held at the Mercedes Benz Arena in Shanghai on Monday.

The Chinese model, 28, accidentally caught the flowing fabric of her ensemble on the heel of her thigh-high gladiator shoes - sending her packing for all to see.

这里我们可以学习send someone packing,在这里表示“force someone to leave a place”,也就是失去平衡的意思。

Ask any model what their greatest Fashion Week fear is and they’ll tell you it involves tripping on the runway. Even supermodels such as Naomi Campbell and Gigi Hadid have had the misfortune of falling mid-strut, though thankfully their missteps did not result in broken bones, just a little embarrassment. At a huge, globally televised event like the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, the stakes are particularly high. It’s why model Ming Xi unwittingly found herself in the spotlight earlier today, tripping over her skirt and falling to her knees onto the VS runway in all her Goddess-segment finery. Astonishingly, she managed to maintain her composure as she fell, echoing Jennifer Lawrence’s fateful moment at the 2013 Oscars, a mistake that become a viral-meme sensation.

Xi completed her walk with a little help from fellow model Gizele Oliveira and had the entire crowd cheering her on as she got back on her feet. She proved that taking a tumble isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially when it ends with all eyes on you.

  • “绊倒”可以用trip on/over表示

  • get back on one's feet表示“站起来”,这个表达也常用来表示“重新振作” “恢复健康”。

Chinese model Ming Xi took a tumble on the runway but still rose above the mishap.

The 28-year-old slipped Monday while walking during the “Winter’s Tale” portion of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai. Xi handled the fall gracefully, readjusting her costume and getting back on her feet in seconds.

Xi, who had tripped on her long train, somehow managed to smile throughout the ordeal. Gizele Oliveira, who was walking behind her, lent a hand as she stood up and then waited for Xi to go forward.

The model’s calm approach to temporary disaster drew applause from the audience and before long, people across social media were praising Xi for her poise. Others also commended Oliveira for her empathy on the runway.

读完了前三篇新闻后,再读这篇就会有“他乡遇故知”的感受,我们又遇到了:take a tumble, mishap(还记不记得hitch?),slip, trip on, get back on one's feet。

1. 摔倒、绊倒可以用slip, trip on/over, fall (on), fall flat on one's face, fall to one's knees,这四篇报道中出奇一致的用了take a tumble

2. 很多表达的比喻义很常见,例如take a tumble, fall flat on one's face, get back on one's feet。

祝她好运,祝她早日get back on her feet。
