Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) must rise to the call of the times, keep in mind its founding mission, and stay in unity and coordination to bring more certainty and positive energy to world peace and development.

7月4日，中国国家主席习近平在上海合作组织峰会上表示，我们要肩负起时代赋予的重任，牢记初心使命，坚持团结协作，为维护世界和平与发展注入更多确定性和正能量。

Xi made the remarks when addressing the 23rd meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) via video conference from Beijing.

习近平在北京以视频方式出席了上海合作组织成员国元首理事会第二十三次会议并发表了上述讲话。

Xi said that member states should keep to the right direction and enhance solidarity and mutual trust. "Facts have shown that as long as we bear in mind the larger picture, shoulder our responsibilities and remain undisturbed by all sorts of distractions, we will be able to protect and promote the security and development interests of our member states," Xi said.

习近平指出，要把牢正确方向，增进团结互信。事实证明，只要我们胸怀大局，担起责任使命，排除各种干扰，就能够维护好、实现好各成员国安全和发展利益。

Member states should step up strategic communication and coordination, bridge differences through dialogue, replace competition with cooperation, truly respect each other's core interests and major concerns, and firmly support each other's endeavor for development and rejuvenation, Xi said.

我们要加强战略沟通和协作，倡导以对话消弥分歧、以合作超越竞争，切实尊重彼此核心利益和重大关切，坚定支持彼此实现发展振兴。

Coco Lee, a Chinese American singer and songwriter best known for performing an Oscar-nominated song in the film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” died on Wednesday. She was 48.

7月5日，美籍华裔歌手兼词曲作者李玟去世，终年48岁。李玟曾因演唱影片《卧虎藏龙》获奥斯卡提名的主题曲而闻名。

The cause was suicide, according to a statement from her sisters, Carol and Nancy Lee. Ms. Lee was taken to a hospital on Sunday after she attempted suicide at her home, they said.

李玟的两个姐姐李秋林、李思林发布声明称，李玟系轻生离世。7月2日，李玟在家中轻生，后被送往医院。

“Coco had been suffering from depression for a few years but her condition deteriorated drastically over the last few months,” her sisters wrote. “Although Coco sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her.”

声明写道，李玟于数年前不幸患上了抑郁症，最近几个月病情急剧恶化。尽管她曾寻求专业帮助，并尽最大努力与病魔斗争，但终未打败心魔。

Ms. Lee had built a successful career as a pop singer in Asia, but she was best known to American audiences for singing the song “A Love Before Time” in the 2000 film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” The song was nominated for an Oscar in the best new original song category, and she performed it in front of a television audience of millions at the Academy Awards ceremony in March 2001.

The U.N. weather agency on Tuesday declared the onset of the major climate phenomenon, warning El Niño’s return paves the way for a likely spike in global temperatures and extreme weather conditions.

The World Meteorological Organization estimated that there’s a 90% probability of the El Niño event persisting through the second half of the year and it is expected to be “at least moderate strength.”
