China and the United States on Wednesday signed their phase-one economic and trade agreement that both sides said benefits each other and the whole world.

After nearly two years' strenuous negotiations, Chinese Vice Premier Liu He and U.S. President Donald Trump inked the papers at the White House East Room on behalf of their respective countries, injecting stability into bilateral relations and adding certainty to global growth.

经过近两年的艰苦谈判，中国国务院副总理刘鹤和美国总统特朗普代表各自国家在白宫东厅签署协议，为双边关系注入了稳定因素，也为全球经济稳定发展增强了确定性。

It "shows that our two countries have the ability to act on the basis of equality and mutual respect, and work through dialogue and consultation to properly handle and effectively resolve relevant issues," Chinese President Xi Jinping said in a message to Trump read out by the vice premier at the signing ceremony.

在签署仪式上，刘鹤转达习近平主席致特朗普总统的口信，习近平表示中美达成第一阶段经贸协议说明“中美双方完全可以在平等和相互尊重的基础上，通过对话磋商找到有关问题的妥善处理和有效解决办法”。

The death toll has climbed to nine as of Tuesday night after a bus fell into a hole caused by a road cave-in in northwest China's Qinghai Province, according to local government. 

据青海省官方消息，该省一路面塌陷致公交车陷入坑内，截至1月14日晚，死亡人数已升至9人。

The cave-in happened at 5:36 p.m. on Monday, when a road section collapsed in front of a hospital on the heavily-trafficked Nandajie Street in the city of Xining, the provincial capital. A public bus fell into the hole and an explosion ensued, local authorities said. The hole stretched nearly 10 meters in diameter.

据当地官方消息，13日下午5时36分，青海省省会西宁市南大街一家医院前的路段发生塌陷事故，当时正值交通高峰期。一辆公交车陷入坑内后发生爆炸。塌陷形成的坑直径约10米。

Nearly 1,000 rescuers, 30 vehicles and two excavators have been dispatched to the site.

One of the most famous Chinese TV hosts and news anchors, Zhao Zhongxiang, has died on Thursday in Beijing. He was 78.

1月16日，中国著名电视及新闻节目主持人赵忠祥于北京逝世，享年78岁。

His son, Zhao Fang, confirmed the news and wrote about the situation in a long post on Zhao Zhongxiang's official account on Toutiao.com. "My father died on 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 16, 2020. He was feeling uncomfortable since the end of last year and went to the hospital. The diagnosis turned out to be cancer, which had spread," Zhao wrote.

赵忠祥的儿子赵方通过赵忠祥的社交媒体“头条”账号发布了一篇博文，证实了这一消息。他写道，家父于2020年1月16日7:30因病在京去世。父亲于2019年底感到身体不适，就医检查，发现身患癌症，已经扩散。

Zhao was born on Jan. 16, 1942 in Xingtai city, Hebei province and his death coincidentally falls on the same day as his 78th birthday.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has announced that the entire government is resigning in a statement released shortly after President Vladimir Putin delivered his annual state-of-the-nation address.

俄罗斯总理梅德韦杰夫在总统普京发表国情咨文后表示，政府将全体请辞。

Accepting the resignation, Putin thanked the ministers for their hard work and asked them to function as a caretaker government until a new one can be formed.

Medvedev and Putin had met for a work meeting to discuss the state-of-the-nation address earlier on Wednesday, the Kremlin said. Medvedev explained that the cabinet is resigning in accordance with Article 117 of the Russian Constitution, which states that the government can offer its resignation to the president, who can either accept or reject it.

During his speech, Putin said he intended to create the position of deputy secretary of Russia’s Security Council, which would be offered to Medvedev.

Medvedev’s move to the new role will mean Russia will have a new prime minister when a new government is formed.
